 Artist Statement

The image Manhattan was inspired by my trip with my daughter (featured in the image) in July 2018 to the USA and NYC. I spent time in Los Angeles before flying across the country to Boston, driving up to Maine to take a workshop. This was my first visit to the USA. Maine is so beautiful (inspired another of my images, 'In the Moment'). After the workshop I headed back to New York exploring the city, Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty and the museums and art galleries. I got to see Van Gogh’s 'Starry Night' up close and personal – a definite bucket list tick for me.

The architecture of the region is very distinctive. I really enjoyed NYC and I can fully appreciate why there have been songs written about its personality and soul. The city is very close to sea level and is vulnerable to the impact of climate change, flooding and high tides along with the associated impact on the inhabitants and environment. Most of us probably think of low lying Pacific Islands when we think about rising sea levels, but grand cities like New York are just as vulnerable. We cannot let this happen, anywhere.

I hope that politicians all over the world will sit up and pay attention to the potential loss of these iconic cities with their distinctive personalities and genuine soul. New York is to the USA, what Sydney is to Australia and London to the UK. These cities are beautiful in their unique ways.

The image consists of 22 individual images and 134 layers. The layered file is 6 GB. The buildings were photographed in and around New York and Boston Massachusetts, USA, the beach is at Seven Mile Beach, Tasmania, the skyline is the New York skyline as seen from the Staten Island Ferry, as was too the Statue of Liberty (can you see her). The girl on the balcony is my beautiful daughter and she is looking down at Talbot the wonder dog who has just caught sight of a passing duck.
