“I love light and colour and birds and animals, fine detail and painterly expression. I love making birds and wildlife come alive in my art, showing each creature’s individual characteristics and personality” ~ Katherine Castle
"I was born in 1970, close to Sydney. Birds and animals were my life as a little girl. My family took in injured wildlife that we cared for ~ many birds, wombats, wallabies and possums. In my adolescent years, we spent weekends in the country and camped in the wilderness on holidays...all of this fostered my love for wildlife and nature.
My grandmother was a painter and she took me to many galleries when I was young. She helped me to observe the subtleties of light and colour in the bush. Meanwhile, my bird-watching grandfather taught me photography and imparted his love and knowledge of birds to me. Without their inspiration and encouragement I probably would not be an artist today.
Spending the last twenty years living in Northern NSW and SE Queensland, my partner and I travelled Australia for 18 months. Our last stop, Tasmania, with its stunning natural beauty and prolific wildlife, has called us home.
I have been working as an artist for twenty-five years. Apart from many commissioned paintings, my paintings have been used in books, calendars, paper tole, notepaper, bookmarks, greeting cards, wine labels and cross stitch patterns. I have been on programs such as "Colour in Your Life".
It has been my very good fortune to have just completed my twelfth series with the homeware company "Maxwell & Williams". To date, they have commissioned 82 paintings that have been used on over 150 different products, including fine bone china mugs, tea cups and saucers, plates, coasters, place-mats and tea-towels. Well over two million products have been sold worldwide. Countries include Australia (of course) as well as Germany, New Zealand, Russia, UK, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Malaysia, Arab Emirates, South Africa, to name a few."
We're certainly feeling very fortunate to be welcoming Katherine to our Gallery Salamanca family.
